I wouldn't be surprised to see a new "Peter R. Cresswell" as one of the newbuilds.

My own suspicion is they took the lowest bid to get the work done.
Also Nantong could do the ship right away. That suggests to me that others were worried about the financial stability of the yard and stayed away.
Kind of like going to a car repair garage that has no one else there, are you just lucky or do others know something you don't.
I'm only guessing but Wrights retirement is a little to close to the tail end of that mess to be co-incidence!
Going to someone from offshore to take over suggests the board had no faith in anyone else on the prior management team.

I know what you mean now that I've read your comments Mike about Wight and the mess with the Nantong Shipyard in China. Again you must be reading my mind as a few years ago I also had mentioned in a thread and post with not much feedback from the other boatnerds, that I wondered if Algoma would have been better off going with the Chengxi Shipyard when compared to Nantong? Like you said and I also said it much sooner, at least CSL got their ships built and delivered on time from Chengxi than Algoma did from Nantong. Also remember when Chengxi rebuilt the Algobay and then built the Algoma Mariner, there were no delays as far as getting them done at Chengxi and then having them be delivered on time to Algoma. Just wonder why Algoma did not stick with the Chengxi Shipyard considering their past history and the success that CSL had with them and that Algoma had with the Algobay and the Algoma Mariner? Perhaps there were other ships being built at the time at Chengxi thus the reasons maybe it could not get done?

Then again Denny, Wright was at the helm when that Chinese shipyard mess happened.
The Strongfield presumably complete sitting rusting. Someone did not do proper due diligence on that shipyard.
CSL managed to get all their new ships without problem!

You must be reading my mind Mike as I thought and figured the same thing that they almost have to name one for Greg Wight after all he has done for Algoma and the way that he has shaped the company for the future especially with the newest additions that being the Equinox-class ships. I am literally banking on it that at least one of the new ships will be named someday for Mr. Wight as he certainly deserves to have his name on a ship. Time will tell.

In keeping with past naming don't be surprised to see the Greg Wright!

I always wondered why they never named a ship " BLACK BEAR " !

Okay boatnerds I have three more new names to add to the mix for what I would consider the good and possible new names for the new Algoma ships being built overseas. How about considering the following names the Algoma Leader, Algoma Pride along with the Algoma Vision. Now then let's breakdown where I get these names from if you will. Let's begin with the Algoma Leader as I think this is very good as it represents Algoma Central Corp. as a leader in the shipping industry and throughout the Great Lakes/Seaway system and the Great Lakes as well. The name can also be used to recognize their leaders in both the past, present and the future of their company. Now to the Algoma Pride and I get this from them taking Pride in what they do, their company along with its history and the future. Finally, the Algoma Vision as I say this could be used as a vision to the future with their new ships and vision not only into the future but in the past as well. These are some of the new names I would go with. Do those sound good to any of you?

I believe that I also mentioned that they should consider going with the name Algoma Hamilton in one of my earlier post and I also agree that Toronto would be a good name as well. Also agree that they should use the Niagara name since their headquarters is in St. Catherines, Ontario and their ships use the Welland Canal frequently as well. Taking nothing away from the names that were mentioned here by many but, I still feel the names I suggested such as the Algoma Pioneer, Algoma Voyageur, Algoma Venture along with the Algoma Century all have a nice ring to it and as I suggested in my earlier posts about the names, they all have a good along with a meaningful definition for the names also. If you also look at the names I picked out, the Voyageur and Venture bring back familiar ULS names along with the Century name as well. So, by going that route you bring back some of the old ULS names as well. Just my thoughts only here on this subject is all!

I have always preferred names symbolizing some aspect of the geographical area in which a vessel is intended to operate or connected to its owner or their customer. I like how LLT/GRN has mostly followed this pattern. With his long association with the Canadian flagged Great Lake shipping industry, I was happy to see a ship named for Robert S. Pierson. In today's environment of "political correctness" I would expect to see a lot less vessels being named after individuals. On a personal note, one of my favorite names for any lake vessels, for some reason, has always been Kaliyuga, which was lost in 1905.

I vote for Agawa Canyon. It says it all.

And I agree, Algoma Niagara does have a nice ring to it! Put it on my list.

You guys think those are good names? Those are corporate branded drivel. Good names would be recycled classic 'Algo' names from the past or something meaningful to the company's history/growth. F.H. Clergue, Goudreau, Michipicoten Harbour, etc.

Algoma Newfoundland would be fitting, seeing that most of their crews are from there.

In reading people's comments about "possible names someday for the new Algoma ships, although it could happen to where they use some of the old names once applied to their ships, I doubt and just don't see it happening sorry to say." Why you ask? Because the new ships from Nantong, China "had the name Algoma prefix to their hulls and Not the Algo prefix if you will." So the point is IMO that Algoma will want to keep probably using the Algoma prefix on their newer ships to represent the company Algoma Central Corp. as I just don't see them taking any of the old names again if I am making any sense here? Sorry to get people's spirits down but look at the new names Algoma Equinox and Algoma Harvester as they went with "Algoma" for the first name and not Algo again if I am making any sense here? This is just my thoughts only here on this.

I wouldn't mind seeing names like Algoontario, Algoville, Algoisle reused myself.

Sorry guys but, I still stand 100% and more firm and will until I am as red as the sun on my first four names I chose for the new ships the Algoma Century, Algoma Voyageur, Algoma Venture along with the Algoma Pioneer. To me those names and I said it before, to me IMO represent the past along with the present and future for the Algoma fleet. Think of it this way, Pioneer for Pioneering the past maybe and the future for Algoma. The Venture for Venturing into a new era with these new ships. Voyageur for their voyages to and from all different places. I like the Century name as it tells of the history and past of Algoma's Centennial in 1999 that they have been around for over 100 years. For a company to be around and do as well as they have for over 100 years, I strongly feel and will make the case that the name Century should be applied to a ship! Also and it was talked that one of them at one point when they were to build at Nantong in China would be named the "Sault" I also agree with that name and it shows their commitment to the Soo area and keeping that name and the history up there also.

I'm with NiagaraMike, "Agawa Canyon" deserves a place in that fleet.

I have another sort of "catchy" name and this is Algoma Superior and why not? Think about it boatnerds if you will as much of the cargoes carried by Algoma originates from Lake Superior ports and Algoma does much of their business loading iron ore pellets and also grain cargoes from Lake Superior ports. I also like the names of Algoma Ontario and Quebec and yeah I know in part that these names were used on earlier vessels. The Ontario name could be chosen for many reasons far too many to list here and the Quebec name for where most of Algoma unloads their grain cargoes and where they load some of their ore cargoes at least in the Province of Quebec if you will. How about this the Algoma Hamilton for where Algoma unloads most of their ore at and does much of their business and also to honor the city of Hamilton as well!
