That started based on the idea that the pilothouse crew would have a better vantage point for navigating the confined waters of the various connecting waterways. In fog on the open lake it was to also give the pilothouse crew a better shot at seeing/hearing things infront of them. In the days before radar it was a real concern.

Can you tell me why on the lakers built before the 70's , they had the wheelhouse at the fore part of the vessel ?
