He would have been 13 in 1867 and drew the photos in the journal. He entered into the US Naval Academy a year later. One of his two namesake US Navy destroyers can be seen in a Mickey Rooney movie.
Here is another pencil drawing I believe to be from from Charlie. Who do you think he was drawing in 1867? This kid knew what he wanted to do when he grew up huh?

What fascinating images. Thank you for sharing them. I'm especially intrigued by the story you've started to piece together. In my limited experience, it seems rare for manifests or log books to have personal touches like the drawing.
Just out of curiosity, is the manifest/log in an archive or in a private collection? I sometimes wonder what kind of maritime history resources must be in people's dens and basements. Of course, they're cherished by the owners, but it's always neat for the rest of us to get a glimpse at them through posts like these.

Thank you for the reply Mr Lafferty. Yes it was out of Lorain. The journal referred to Lorain as Black River. Most of the cargoes were similar to what the geography bore in the area. There were e few exceptions like the the iron ore. It is more of a financial journal listing cargoes and persons aboard. The routes she sailed were not mentioned much.
The part that now has me searching for more information is the picture in the back that I posted below. I believe the picture to be drawn by Charles Putnam at the age of about 15 or 16 shortly after he joined the Naval Academy in the late 1860's. He later went on to sail around the world and even had two US Naval Destroyers named after him. I can't find much more on him other than the Wikipedia page.
My information search is seeking any more information linking him to the Nellie Fox.

Most likely. Since the Lily Fox was out of Lorain, I imagine those cargoes of block stone were probably quarried at Kelleys Island or close by in that area. Block stone was used primarily for building foundations. Is there any indication of where the cargo was loaded?

BTW in the rear of the manifest there is a picture drawn that matches the image in the Father Dowling website.
There is a name written on the left side of the picture. Charlie Putnam. A search on old Charlie is another story.
