Like people, ships have personalities which is the result of the various crew onboard at the time. On the fore house ships I have worked on there was a good working relation ship with the engineers, and non liscenced crew. It all depends on the individual and how they treat others. The best ship I found is one where everyone is like a big family, we all joke together, eat together, and everyones ideas, and views count. The worst ships are ones were the captain is crusty and puts everyone on edge, and you then have the trickle down effect. On these ships accidents are more likely to happen and a general unrest of the crew can be felt even with an outsider looking in.

crew relationships

I was curious about the older boats on the lakes, the ones with the pilothouse up front and the relationship between guys who spent their working hours in the pilothouse/front area of the boat and the guys who spent their time in the stern or belowdecks in the engine room.

It seems obvious to me (a landlubber) that Captains would not let anything get too far out of hand as far as any rivalries or shenanigans, and I know there was a difference between officers and non officers onboard, but I was curious if there were any us and them ideas and how guys in one area of the ship got along with guys from the other area?
