I doubt very highly you would have a problem selling that model! Shipping it somewhere may be an issue to ensure it arrives undamaged but dependent upon your location a pick-up may also be possible.Jared wrote: July 11, 2023, 4:30 pmI'm not an expert on the Fitzgerald's configurations. In addition, there is no exhaust pipe for the bow thruster extending up on the starboard side of the forward cabins placed approximately 45 degrees to the back edge of the pilot house. While consisting of nothing more than a vertical pipe with a black ring at the top, this exhaust pipe was very prominent in pictures of the ship during that timeframe. Is it possible that the modeler was using earlier plans and/or photographs for the model? Such things happen quite often with both model building and artwork when the creator uses a variety of source information without fully correlating the dates to a specific configuration they are attempting to replicate.Guest wrote: July 10, 2023, 9:27 pm That's a nice model of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Jared. The 1/16" scale is common, though most museums would want a 1/8" scale model, as it's easier to make add/make detail an easier for the public to admire the model. The colours look correct, too. Though, one area I see is that radar on the tall mast. By 1974, the Fitzgerald was using the smaller antennae - it was changed in October 1973.

Re: Deck machinery help
That is a nice model! I don't recall the Fitzgerald having grates over its bow thruster tunnels in the photographs of it after the tunnel was installed. Once again, that is a really nice model and the maker did excellent work. As someone who is an enthusiastic modeler, I can attest to the amount of work that goes into one of these creations, especially when building from scratch without a kit.Jared wrote: July 10, 2023, 11:31 amNope that's it in completed form. Ted McCutcheon finished it for me and wanted to get rid of it as it had been sitting in his barn for 10 years after a musuem backed out of it. The scale is a bit smaller than what others have built so details would have to be made from scratch.fitz301 wrote: July 9, 2023, 6:51 pm What a great looking model, looks really accurate.
Are you still working on it? I would love to keep up with your progress and see it when you're finished.
I'll probably post some pics of my CG model, but it's no where near primetime right now. I've been working on it for quite a while, and have been going through and redoing a lot of stuff because I've learned a lot of better modeling techniques since I started her, and some things I got just plain wrong.
Great job on your Fitz through, it's looks pretty spot on.

Re: Deck machinery help
Here is the only ones I can get to load. 1:16th scale in 1974 configuration without TV antennas.Guest wrote: July 5, 2023, 11:25 pm Thanks for all the help everyone, I appreciate it. If anyone should happen across any new photos, I would appreciate a 'heads up'.
I would love to see your model Jared, I am aware of all the antennas and other stuff that was added over the Fitz lifetime, but I haven't yet decided which era I'll model yet, at this stage I'm just adding the things I assume would have been there originally from her inception and I'll move on and add as I do more research.
If anyone knows manufacture names of certain parts, sometimes that can help track down more information.
Accuracy is my goal here, as much as I can if possible?
Re: Deck machinery help
Does anyone happen to know the name of the company that made the lifeboat davits, or were they made in-house at GLEW?
I want to see if I can find the patent for the life-saving gear.

Re: Deck machinery help
I have a 1:16th scale model of the Fitzgerald in her 1975 configuration. There was not a lot of machinery on deck except for her hatch crane and two spare propeller buckets.
Things that people normally don't include is the dozens of TV antennas jutting out of the cabins on both ends and the decklight configuration in 1975 was down the middle of the ship, not down the sides on the walkway like her original configuration.
For some reason I cannot post pictures of my model.

Re: Deck machinery help
Just a couple of suggestions... If and when you are near one of the fine museums in the Great Lake ports, like Duluth, etc.,.. you will have access to to their display photos and models of the Fitzgerald. And second, keep searching on the Internet. I am always surprised by new photos and videos that arise of these older Lakers. BOL!
Deck machinery help
Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone would know where I could find some pictures of Fitzgerald era lake ship deck machinery (ventilators, fuel tanks, davits, winches, etc.) that are closer and of better quality that most found on the web.
I'm working on a 3d model of the Fitz and I would like it to be as accurate as possible, even close up.
The areas I'm having the most trouble are the main spar deck winches, lifeboat davits, the controls and mechanism of the p/s warping sheave(?) pulleys, aft spar deck anchor winch, tow hook, and interior spaces in general (pilothouse, staterooms, engine room, etc).
If anyone knows where some detail photographs or drawings can be found, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks.
