Here's a photo of the Hulett at the Cornelia Copper Smelter in Ajo, Arizona under construction around 1915 (Dave Ayers notes that it was built in 1919.)

Dave Ayers shows that the Huletts in Fort William, Ontario were dismantled around 1960-61.

Thank you very much for the info. I had not thought of Fort William/Port Arthur as a possibility when I wrote the first post. Would also make them the only non-US Huletts. I was first up to Thunder Bay in 1976 and all trace was apparently gone by that point.

Eric Hirsimaki in the Summer 1991 (Volume 47) issue of Inland Seas wrote an article on the Huletts. He mentioned that the two Huletts in Fort William, were the only ones on Lake Superior and were rated for 8 tons of coal due to its low cubic weight.

There was also a Hulett in New York City for unloading garbage scows (must have been a fun job for the operator) and another at Sandy Hook, NJ.

I do recall seeing a photo of a small Hulett in Utah or Colorado for use at a copper processing plant.

The video of the Hulett Unloaders in operation that was linked from today's (01/30/2024) Boatnerd News is outstanding. They were giant examples of amazing engineering.

Cannot help on whether or not Lake Superior employed them. Sorry.

Huletts on Lake Superior?

Unread post by Guest »

Today's Boatnerd News article on the unfortunately end of the stored Cleveland Huletts mentions that there were 2 Hullets built on Lake Superior for unloading coal - something that I have not heard of before.

Other than Duluth/Superior or possibly Marquette, I can't think of any Lake Superior ports that could potentially have had need for a Huletts, and I've never heard of one in either location.

When googling the subject, the only site that seems to have any information about Huletts on Lake Superior is the Wikipedia page on Huletts, from which the Boatnerd News information seems to have been taken verbatim.

Are Huletts being used in a Lake Superior port a Wikipedia legend - is this some little know part of Great Lakes Shipping history? If it's the later, where were these located? Thanks.
