No, the days of the thousand footers are over, they were built to maximize Tonnage for both Ore and Coal. With coal almost a thing of the past and a variety of other cargoes moving in smaller yet substantial qtys any new ship built on the lakes going forward will stay within max seaway dimensions to be best utilized.

Knowing the current situation with the economy and the demands for iron ore and taconite, is it feasible to predict that we could at some point see a vessel larger than the current queen of the lakes the Paul R Tregurtha? Perhaps 1,100 or even 1,200 feet? Personally, I do not see this happening.
