They finally got underway today from their anchorage in Goulais Bay. Their ETA has them listed for a Superior destination next. Are they going to Fraser Shipyards up there then to get further repairs done to them or are they going to be loading ore pellets in Superior at the BNSF Dock? Any information is appreciated and thanks.

It really seems like something has gone terribly wrong at the management level at Lower Lakes/Grand River. I'm sure there's probably a connection with Rand having gotten control of ASC a while back. After all, these situations don't spring up overnight. That said, If the fleet is dumped, it'll be probably be the contracts that'll be bought and the boats will simply be attached to the contracts. I've seen this a way back in the 60s and 70s, though I can't cite any specific example. I would also say, that whoever does get the fleet operations, will need to put in quite a "chunk of change" to bring the boats up to code.

Back up to code? What does that mean? You do realize that ABS, Lloyd's USCG and or CCG are the people who enforce the code. There have been several vessels who have lost a rudder besides these folks. Until the final report is made by the code enforcers, all is pure speculation.

Definitely NOT a very good year and season so far for the vessels in the Lower Lakes Towing & Grand River fleets!

The rudder fell off. Technically it is a mechanical issue as well, but yes the rudder fell off.

They are still at anchor in Goulais Bay on October 17 as of 4:25 p.m. ET and hope that this information helps out.

They got towed in there the other day, must have had an engine problem and are anchored up working on it.

It could be related to the weather possibly? In another post, I had mentioned the Indiana Harbor at anchor in the lower St. Marys River and the reply I got was “They were at anchor due to NW winds and a drop in water levels in the Rock Cut!” The other day, I noticed H. Lee White was at anchor in Goulais Bay with the Pierson. So I assume it was most likely weather related possibly? Hope this helps.
