Denny, AIS gets its position from the vessel's GPS. If you turn the AIS on without turning on the GPS, it will generate an incorrect position and show the ship elsewhere.

I checked them out recently though on Marine Traffic and they’re showing them departing Cleveland on February 25 yet arriving back in port also the 25th. This I don’t think is correct as they have not departed their Winter Lay Up yet in Cleveland. I’ve seen Marine Traffic do this type of deal often on vessels in Winter Lay Up. Can someone please try to explain why they do this then? Thanks.

The Alpena isn’t Fitting Out until mid April due to some parts (Turbine) that they’re waiting to receive.

Saw the Alpena's AIS running today (Mar 1). Are they fitting out? I remember waiting anxiously for the S. T. Crapo to sail in early March back in the 60s. Always an encouraging sign for an old wharf rat like me.
