They were raised to help make up for loss of capacity taken up by the self unloading system. Note that the USS AAA have a raised trunk that was added when they were converted.

They were raised when she was converted to a self-unloader to help her cube out when carrying coal.

Saw the Mississagi today at Port Huron and noticed the first five hatch combings are twice the height of the rest. Any reason why that is?
