Will Algoma end up building any new ships in China to replace
the Algosteel and the tonnage and cargoes lost from her going to
scrap? Who will end up carrying her cargoes such as stone, salt,
coal, grain and sugar cargoes?

Where is everyone hearing this about the Algosteel?Guest wrote:The Algosteel is done this year; I don't know about the Algomarine.
Algomarine is going to spend the winter on the salt run out of Goderich. At least two loads slated for Milwaukee this winter.

Re: Algosteel
Weren't most of these ships built with a limited life span that they have all ready passed?
Re: Algosteel
Having working on and around these lakers since the early `70s , I can not get over how the shipping companies , mostly Canadian , went from doing a pretty decent job of ship maintenance e.g. mechanical upkeep and chipping & painting , to pretty well running these `60s built lakers into the ` water ` so to speak . This is from a Chief Engineer`s stand point , and would have been a real sore point if I was still working on the lakers today . But I saw the light many years ago and shifted my career focus to the Coast Guard so I thankfully got away from this so called ` bottom ` line way of running vessels . Regardless here we are today watching well built lakers that could have lasted longer with proper care being scrapped and replaced with ` salties ` built to last 10 to 15 years . Makes no sense .
