If you are referring to the round disc shape on the top of the A-frame, that is radar. The early radar systems used a Radome type of enclosure for the radar antennae.

Whats also refreshing, was the washing hanging out to dry on the Bayfair, it means sailors are a clean bunch of individuals. The apparatus on top of the unldg rigs, looks like radar antennas housed in a cylindrecal cacoon.

Love the pictures and descriptions. What are the attachments on top of some of the unloading rigs?

It is our pleasure posting these Historical Perspectives. It is our intention to not only introduce new Boatnerds to the historic boats that made Great Lakes shipping so unique but to also bring back pleasant memories for all of us who grew up watching the lakers.

Was really a warm feeling seeing the pictures of the Fitzerald, Paisley, and Tate today on His Pics. They were frequent visitors to the port of Manistee in the forties, and fifties. My thanks to Jon Paul and Brent Michaels.
