If you want to buy a marine radio go to any marina in the Niagara region. If you have a passport I'd zip across the border and pick up a Radio shack pro 96-97 These radios will get the on board comms and other stuff. I own both Cobra marine and a Pro -26 scanner

I too have the Uniden Atlantis 250 which replaced a dead Uniden Bearcat multi-channel scanner. You can program the 250 scanning channels and with a good rooftop antenna I can pick up Sarnia traffic in Conneaut Ohio.

Lee, wow,when I purchased mine back in the late
1990's or 2000 it wasn't that expensive, I actually
got mine at the local area Radio Shack store on
sale. I use it primarily for railfanning an great lakes
freighter watching, the execption being NOAA weather.

When I am out railfanning or freighter watching, there's
no need to clog up the channels with all those unwanted
frequencies,but to each their own as I say.

Seriously, its one of the best out their, I believe the
Pro 95 was the counterpart, an by now Radio Shack
perhaps has replaced these with new model types,am
not sure. Again its really easy to place the frequencies
in, and it does not eat batteries like some other hand
held scanners do,has great range,you can easily
get the larger external antenna an connect to it.

I've got a Radio Shack Pro-96 and have good luck with it along the Detroit and St. Clair Rivers, you do need to program in your own channels or do as I did have the "nerd" at the store do it for you.

If it helps, I have used a Radio Shack Pro 94
1000 channel, trunking, the whole works, a lot
of nice perks on this hand held, although you
need to load your own frequencies, its really
very good.

I read the reviews of the cheaper Uniden models, Googled the model and read the reviews.
Spent a little more money but I guess you get what you pay for.
Can you order via Amazon in Ca?

I use a Uniden scanner and when at Duluth or Two Harbors it picks up the docks to ships loading.Works good as well as the Towboats on the Miss.river in the Twin Cities area .

I'm looking into picking up a small hand held scanner for listening to local vessel traffic; does anyone have any experience they'd be willing to share in this field?
I'm on the fence between a scanner vs a marine radio, i.e. Uniden Atlantis 250 vs something like a Uniden BC95XLTB Scanner. Any thoughts as to range of receiving a signal etc.?
