I wonder if they'll make a movie of some sorts of this one. After the looter report, there's a link to the captain's girlfriend, a dancer onboard without a ticket, testifying at his trial. The story has it all, unfortunately, including 30 some fatalities.

The damage to the starboard side of the superstructure is appalling. Undoubtedly it was discovered and thoroughly surveyed by divers months ago, and when it was, any lingering ideas about restoring the vessel to service went by the board.

The laws there must be different, because here they could only charge the Captain and the officer on watch and only take action against his license and not him personally unless there was a deliberate act. A deliberate act would be running a ship on a reef to get the insurance money and someone died in the process. I don't see the Captain doing any serious jail time, but believe that sailing days are over unless he plans on becoming a commercial fisherman or renting row boats to the tourists.

Five people have been charged. Two navigational officers and the wheelsman plea bargained, but still were sentence to time in jail, which they probably won't serve. It seems quite complicated. Early reports didn't really get specific on who was where, who had the con, etc.

He's been charged with multiple manslaughter and causing a shipwreck. His trial is scheduled to resume next week.

The other case of parbuckling that comes to mind involves the recovery of the Lawrencecliffe Hall(ii) that was beached on Ile d'Orleans in November 1965 following a collision with Saguenay Terminals' Sunek. Grounded in sinking condition, a rising tide had rolled the ship onto her starboard bilges, 64 degrees off even keel. A salvage plan was devised by Marine Industries' Salvage Master Paul DuTremble, and using a complex of cables and pulleys the ship was slowly righted over the winter by a battalion of bulldozers stationed on the shore. In March 1966, the refloated -- though still partially tidal -- Lawrence was towed to Davie Shipbuilding, where repairs and refit were carried out over the next six months.

Reports say the vessel has been lifted off the reef and returned several degrees towards vertical and is now sitting on the platform built on the seabed to cradle the hull.

Image below shows the initial movement to vertical, the wreck has been moved several degrees more since photo was taken. The operation was scheduled to continue through the night.

The ship is being rolled onto it's keel using the parbuckling method. The same method used to turn the Oklahoma in 1943. This system used a bunch of chains and cables attached to the ship to roll it up-right.

Cudos to the Italians for making the owners clean up their mess.
