There are always some interesting sounds breaking ice. You get the crashing and banging as usual and you get so used to it that when it stops you have to look out to see if you are stuck or in open water. Another sound is the flooding alarm in one of the forward tanks or compartments which means oops= Just punched a hole or knocked a plate loose. The one I hated most was the high pitch squeal like finger nails on a black board when the ice scraping on the hull.

Although they made the transit from Detroit to the St. Clair River in better time than other convoys over the past few days have, darkness was rapidly closing in as I snapped the last photo.
