Fitzgeral and Home hull design

For some reason the hull designs of the Edmund Fitzgerald and Arthur B. Homer have always appeared to be somewhat more "boxy" than those of other ships built between 1950 and 1960. Did this design incorporate less curves or sheer than those of other ships of the time period, or is it just my perception playing tricks with me?
