No winter this year!

The MV Arctic visited Narvik, Norway in late December 1978. The weather was not extremely cold as that part of the world is moderated by the warm gulf stream.

We have been 'in the same boat' as Tyrge out West. Everybody in Park City ,Utah (silver mining to ski-town) starts cussing when hearing about all the 'unwanted' snow' that has been piling up back east. We have also been 'way' warmer than usual. We moved out here to ski in powder not the current mashed potatoes (too warm) ! Will be happy to see higher lake levels upon return to Door County, Wi. Done kvetching !

First off Thank You to TrygveS for sharing your story with us about the weather in a part of the world that most of us probably will never get to visit or see in our lifetimes. Your story was very captivating and thrilling to read about the weather in your country and I agree with Guest 5464 as Norway is a very beautiful county with its fjords and many different scenery and landscapes. I also agree with Brian's comments as yes, I would also like to trade the weather in Norway for ours here in Michigan. Here in the Detroit area we have had our "second snowiest winter on record with just over 83 inches and about 10 inches or so away from tying or even breaking the record." The record for snowiest winter was set in the late 1800s with just over 93 inches of snow and we can stop anytime with the snow as like Brian said, I have also seen enough of it along with the cold as well. As with Guest 5464, hopefully things will start to improve on our weather come Spring. At least we are lucky compared to other parts of the U.S. just look at what took place in California with the rain and floods and what the East Coast has been getting for this winter. It could always be worse the way I see and look at it.

Don't mean to be Too doom and gloom here, but I think things will improve when we decide that we can't go on abusing the only place we have to live.

Thank you for sharing winter conditions in your part of the world, Tygve. I think of Norway with its beautiful fijords and lush vegetation in the summer and skaters on the ice as snow falls in the winter, but your description changes that. Since human nature focuses on what is happening where one is, we usually don't see the world-wide "Big Picture" Overall, the continental US has had an unprecedented span of frigid weather and deep snows, ice storms, drought, and heavy rains in the past few months. But Europe has had storms with winds strong enough to batter and wreck a ship trying to make harbor in France and, in Australia, they've broken their all-time summer heat record. We can only hope and pray things will begin improving as spring comes.

Yeah? Well, I'll trade ya! I've had enough of this snow & cold. By the way things are out on Lake Erie, It'll be July before the first boat gets into Buffalo.

I am a norwegian. And I have for several years been a friend of boatnerd.com. Shipping, locks and waterways are fascinating stuff to read about.
(and a "hello" to relatives, who lives in the lakes area)

From what I read the winter has been harsh in the northeastern USA. In my part of the world - middel-/northern part of Norway - we have had no winter! No snow since november, and just dead, brown grass cower in lower regions. In fact, we have had spring temperatures for a long time. And according to meterologists it shall stay that way for a long time to come. And real spring is nearly here...

A lot of people are expressing "what have happened to the weather?" and shakes their head.

This was just a quick report from this side oft the Atlantic. Hope you all soon will have spring temperatures, too!
