In reply to the post of the Great Lakes Historical Society on the geneology of the Steinbrenner's, see my post below under the title "Kinsman & The Steinbrenner's" where I have discribed the correct geneology of George M. Steinbrenner III. It goes like this: Henry Steinbrenner, born in 1849, married Sophia Minch in 1876, the daughter of Philip J. Minch (1820-1887) and Anna C. Minch (1818-1905). Peter G. Minch their son, and the brother of Sophia, died with his wife and thier two young children in the sinking of the Western Reserve in 1892 in Lake Superior.
Henry and Sophia Steinbrenner had a son born in 1880, George M. Steinbrenner II. About 1906 this son had a son named Henry G. Steinbrenner, named for his grandfather and the founder of the Kinsman fleet. This grandson of Henry Steinbrenner, named Henry G. Steinbrenner became the father of George M. Steinbrenner III, who died this week. George M. Steinbrenner III was the great-grandson of Henry Steinbrenner born in 1849, and the grandson of George M. Steinbrenner II born in 1880. George M. Steinbrenner III was born in 1930, a year after Henry Steinbrenner died in 1929 at age 80. George M. Steinbrenner II died in 1949, and his son Henry G. Steinbrenner took over the Kinsman fleet until 1963 when his son George M. Steinbrenner III took over the fleet.
Two ships bought by Kinsman were named in honor of George M. Steinbrenner III's grandfather, George M. Steinbrenner II.

George also owned an interest in the Chicago Bulls basketball team. My father worked for American Shipbuilding Company in Chicago for 30 years and used to get box seats to the games at the old Stadium. This was in the pre-Jordan 70's when nobody wanted to go to the games, any NBA games for that matter.

Here is the Minch Steinbrenner Geneology.

Phillip Minch fathered Peter Minch.

Peter Minch, among several of his children, fathered Sophia Minch.

Peter Minch and most of his family were lost in the sinking of the Western Reserve circa 1892. Sophia was not on board.

Sophia married George M. Steinbrenner II

This marriage produced Henry Steinbrenner who fathered George M. Steinbrenner III, who recently passed away.

Thanks

It was announced today that George Steinbrenner has died at the age of 80. He owned the NY Yankees and also owned Kinsman Marine Transit. Their last boat was the Kinsman Independent, now sailing as LLT's Ojibway. Kinsman was originally founded back in 1842 when Philip Minch got into the Lake shipping business. If memory serves, Mr. Steinbrenner's father, Henry, married Philip Minchs' daughter and that's George Steinbrenner's connection to Philip Minch. There was no reported cause of death for Mr. Steinbrenner and service details have not been released.
