What is this?

Re: What is this?
They call that a "spud barge". You lower the "spuds" (posts) to secure the barge in position to work. These barges can be "crabbed", swung back and forth to manuver, by lifting one "spud", swinging the barge, and dropping the "spud" to gain a new position. The "spuds" when lowerd provide a secure/more secure platform to work upon.

it's nothing more than a crane on a barge. the 2 posts on either side are lowered into the bottom to hold it in place. there are probably close up pictures of dredges in the photo galleries if you snoop around a bit.

Thanks Paul. I have to say that is a strange looking thing.

That's a dredge barge being moved by a tug. They've been busy all season so far.
