I stayed at the Inn at Lock 7 two weeks ago and in a 24-hour period I saw 10 ships from my balcony. The inn is very basic, but it is clean, the staff are very friendly and helpful, and it is a great place to watch the ships from. The only problem, is that I didn't get much sleep - too busy watching the ships!!

I live by Lock 1 and it takes me 15 minutes to get to downtown Niagara Falls - and that's driving along the Canal to the Homer Bridge. Takes longer if there are ships to Photograph!
Besides, the Falls are amazing, but the area surrounding them is a first-class tourist-trap. The Canal, the Winerys, the historical sites and Port Colborne are well worth the effort.

Unfortunately the Canal does not run through Niagara Falls or Niagara-on-the-Lake. IMO, it's not very far away, but I have talked to several tourists who thought it was too far from there.
Lock 3 in St Catharines is probably the best place for a family. The viewing platform gives a great view of the lock.
Lock 7 in Thorold is also good and provides a view from one end of the lock. Lock 1 (also in St Catharines) also provides an end view.
If you're looking for a place to stay with a view of a lock, check out the Inn at Lock 7.

The Visitors Center at Lock 3 has a well established viewing platform. Other popular spots where I see a lot of gawkers are at Lock 7 and above Lock 2. There are other opportunities around Lock 8 as well.

Just about everywhere the Canal is a great tourist area just get there the flight locks are the most interesting you can get to the base at river level and be right next to a boat, there are places where boats tie up to wait and you can walk right up and get personal. look at pictures from the Welland and of course te Inn at lock 7.It's a great area to visit and Niagra Falls from the Canadian side. You will need a passport or validated drivers license to get into country

Where would be the best location for viewing the locks in the Niagara Falls / Niagara on the Lake area? Thanks
