Re: Hollyhock
The smaller 175 ft Tenders have Z Drives so hub seals are not an issue. The hub seal problem has been worse on the boat that break ice. This was a concern we had when we built them, but you can only tell people, you can't make them listen. This was a problem on the Coast Guard's two Polar Icebreakers in the beginning and it was solved and I am sure that somewhere down the road, a better seal will be designed that will eliminate this problem. It is definitely cheaper to have a diver replace the seals, but there may be other issues that need to be addressed in the drydock.

As a commercial diver I can guarantee you it costs a lot more to put a boat in drydock and fix the seals than have a diver do it.Charlie wrote: Also; it cheaper to fix a seal in the dock than to have divers doing the work.
Re: Hollyhock
Do not forget that the CCG Risley just left the yard at PW in the last 2 weeks. All the Coast Guard boats this is there winter maintenance cycle. They work all winter in the ice and in the fall and spring doing ALTON work.
Know is when they can get in the yards for the maintenance that everyone else does in January through March. I would also bet the yard love the work because it fills in between everything else.
On a personal note I would say that the breakers on the lakes take a bigger beating than the other boats in the fleet. If I remember right every time one of the arctic breakers come back it goes in a maintenance cycle and yard trip looking for haul problems.
Also; it cheaper to fix a seal in the dock than to have divers doing the work.
Just my 2cents

Re: Hollyhock
Maybe its time they took these new builds back to the designer. As we speak the Mac is in the drydock in Sturgeon Bay, the Alder is on its way to Maryland to go in a drydock there, and it now sounds as if the Hollyhock is going to need a drydock. Do the other 225's hit the drydock as often or is it just the ones that operate in ICE. Seems to me there are at least 16 of them, and a dozen or more of the 175's which are very similar only shorter. Are they all in the drydock as often with the same problems and we just don't hear about it.

Re: Hollyhock
Hollyhock was going to be at the Grand Haven Festival but the anouncement posted yesterday on the News page doesn't mention her. The hub seal failure must be worse than "normal".

Re: Hollyhock
It is there because of the hub seal. Might be able to help with the recovery of the plane, which was found Thursday in 180 feet of water.

Re: Hollyhock
I assume that the boom is to contain the oil that always leaks from the hub seals on the prop. This is a chronic problem with the 225's.

I assume it is for the recovery of the Cessna that crashed off Big Sable Point in Lake Michigan last Friday.
