"Wharfrat1" brings up the possibility of using the retiring Algoma Progress' boom to replace the severely-damaged one on the MV. Algoway. I don't know what Algoma Central's plans are, but this certainly makes more sense than replacing the Algoway boom with that of the Algoma Transfer (as another post suggested). The booms from the Transfer (or the James Norris if still around) are of the modern, triangular, tubular design. The booms of the Algoway and the retiring Progress are both of the older type - rectangular, constructed of angular steel, heavier than the triangular booms. I'm no expert, but it seem more likely that Algoma would replace a damaged old-style boom with another undamaged old-style (rectangular) boom.

If the Progress is going, too bad that her stern couldn't be reused to modernize an older vessel with more life left in her forebody. She has one of the younger engine rooms on the lakes and is a very efficient carrier thanks to her repowering back around 1990.

Has the Progress been sold for scrap?

Although I know nothing about unloading booms, I can't help but think this is like trying to fit 1968 Ford parts on a 1972 Chevy. Might be possible, but I figure low odds.

What are the chances that the unloading boom from the Progress will be salvaged and put on the Algoway since they will both be in Port Colbourne shortly?
