He must first got to www.tsa.gov and schedule an appointment to get a TWIC card ($132.50). Follow directions provided for that process. Once he has been processed by the TSA vendor he can apply for a Merchant Mariners Credential at a local REC (regional exam center.) Type USCG and REC into a search engine for the nearest center. There will be a link to explain the process, but essentially he must fill out an application (CG-719), complete a physical and DOT drug test, and pay a $140 fee. If he has no criminal/drug/alcohol issues he will be issued a MMC. That, a TWIC, and a passport will provide him with the documentation he needs to work anywhere in the country on a US flagged ship. Next he will have to contact shipping companies and/or unions to secure employment. Good luck--it is an honorable profession.

My son is interested in getting a job in the merchant marine business. He would like to know what are the requirements to become an unlicensed crew member? He is interested in any type of duty that is available whether it be Great Lakes, Mississippi, Gulf Coast, Deep Ocean, Alaska, etc.. He was also wondering what papers he would need from the Coast Guard to get such a job.
