That pier can barely hold enough stone to load the saginaw.
Never seen coal there.
See coal brought to carmuse lime dock east of blind river regular.
Will be in thessalon on friday and will check dock.

Do the smelting operations in Sudbury use any coal that's shipped into Thessalon or any other North Channel port?

My thoughts regarding Thessalon versus the Carbide dock in Sault, MI. With Thessalon they are able to use a Canadian carrier and the dock costs would be in Canadian $$ as well as the freight costs. Current exchange rate U.S. to Can. funds is over 20%. Also, the bridge costs for trucks at the Sault would negate the longer haul from Thessalon. Just saying.

Believe the coal is to be trucked from the Thessalon dock to Essar Steel (50 Miles) in the Sault. It would seem scheduling mishaps can be more costly at times, however necessary to maintain production.

The last time Essar had post-closing coal deliveries they were unloaded at the Carbide dock which is much closer than Thessalon. Any ideas why it didn't happen this time ? That trucking cost would be an unwelcome expense to a company already in a financial bind.

Bruce Mines and Thessalon both have facilities. However, Bruce Mines only loads "Trap Rock", not regular gravel/stone or sand.

Purvis's tug Wilfred M. Cohen went north through the Mississagi Strait yesterday and is working in the area. I assume it is assisting with ice breaking and perhaps ship assist.

Coal to Thessalon? Where is it used? The only thing I can guess would be Algoma Steel, which has no access to its coal dock this time of year for eastern coal.

They have coal from Sandusky.

There are 3 routes from Huron into the North Channel. Mississagi Straits, False Detour Passage and the Turkey Trail (between Drummond and St. Joe) Most commonly used is Mississagi Straits. The Turkey Trail will be used if a vessel is downbound the St. Mary's river. No one is using that at this time of year.

I think that they may have loaded coal from Sandusky? If you go to the marinetraffic.com website, it lists them a few days ago as having loaded coal from Sandusky. Based off of that information, I am assuming that this is what they are taking up to Thessalon?

The navigation channel is between Drummond and st. Joesph islands, they will head thru the detou passage, and then head north/northeast to reach Thessalon.

I see the Whitefish Bay is currently in Thessalon along with the icebreaker Griffon. Also, the Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin is upbound Sarnia with a destination of Thessalon. Where are they loading for? Also, is this late to be loading there? Also, where is the navigation channel for Thessalon? I know when I sailed I was shown where the channel was, but I don't remember anymore. Is it between Drummond and St. Joseph Island? Thanks.
