We purchased the Nikon Coolpix P530 and received it yesterday. It has a standard camera strap like that on most DSLRs and has the option of looking through the lens. It has a feel very similar to our Canon EOS but maybe just slightly smaller and lighter. We won't know how it works with the ships until this weekend.

I attached a lanyard to my point-and-shoot camera's strap and keep it around my neck. The camera stays in a jacket or pants pocket until I'm ready to photograph. Takes away the chance of losing it in the water.

Almost all of my pics on the news page are taken with a Nikon Cool Pics camera.
Pros: The new technology is getting really good compared to older point & shoot cameras- they're almost near DSLR quality now. They have a feature that helps a lot with photographing boats. If you partially depress the shutter button, it will focus on a different object in the frame to help you pick out what you want to shoot properly. They have also programmed it to compensate for backlighting. These two features are important when shooting large, dark objects like trains or boats that are sometimes backlit, or seen at a distance.
The mechanical zoom function is good, & the image stabilization works well. They have wifi built in so you can transfer pics to your phone or tablet for editing. They're cheaper than a DSLR & easier to use 'on the go'.
Cons: I'm on my 3rd one in about 4 years. First one wasn't broken or anything, just out of date & it was time to upgrade, but camera #2 died right after the warranty was up & they wanted $70 to fix it. Maybe I should have bought the store's extended plan, but too late now. Running on camera #3 now, so we'l see how this one does. One thing it can't do that my DSLR excells at is night photos. Point & shoots are hard to handle too. You have to get used to looking at the screen & not the viewfinder & they are small to hold on to & usually made of shiny, slippery plastic without any form of grip or ergonomic design since they're supposed to be slim & trim & not bulky. To me, they don't "feel" like a "real camera". My DSLR is just like my original 35mm film SLR, it feels natural, like a revolver would to an old gun-hand, where the point & shoot is clunky & can easily squirt out of your grip & be dropped in the lake....

I have a 520 and am very happy with it. The long zoom lens is great for distance shots. I started carrying this instead of my full size SLR.

Nikon Coolpix P530
My wife is considering purchasing a new point and shoot camera and she was wondering about Nikon's Coolpix P530. We were wondering if anyone has ever used this camera for photographing the ships? I have used Canon since the mid-1990s and have a DSLR but don't know much about Nikon cameras.
