Just semantics about whether a self-propelled creation is called a vessel, ship or boat for that matter. Vessel seems to be used to describe anything afloat.

HMS Her (or His, in the near future) Majesty's Ship. Royal Navy
HMCS Her Majesty's Canadian Ship. Canadian Navy.
USS United States Ship I believe. Or Federation Star Ship.

In the context of a federation starship the prefix stands for United Star Ship.

Italian jokes aside.... There really is an AMB hull designation.

The U.S. Navy and the Royal Navy use the hull classification AMb to designate a Harbor Minesweeper.

The Italian Navy does not use prefix designations. Instead they use an alphanumeric suffix system to classify the hulls.

NATO sometimes uses the suffix ITS to indicate that a vessel is an 'Italian Ship'.

Oh NOHMS is the designation for the BRITISH Royal navy.
England has not had a navy since 1707.

The Navy & Marine Corps use a fleet of auxiliary ships operated by the Military Sealift Command. They are designated as USNS. These ships are manned by a civilian crew with a small military detachment. The ships are oilers, supply ships & vessels carrying USMC equipment. Mike

With changes in power plants, the designation S.S. is nearly obsolete, being replaced by M.V. and M.S. What is the difference between the last two designations? Aside from that, what are the following?
