Bridge Street Bridge Marine City, MI

Unread post by Guest »

Growing up during the 1970s I remember there being an older bridge crossing the Belle River at Marine City, Michigan near the location that a newer bridge was built connecting Main Street to S. Belle River Avenue. The older bridge was just upstream from the new bridge and was a swing bridge, although I never remember seeing it have ever moved. In looking at an old 1970 Great Lakes Pilot, the section on the Belle River lists this bridge as the Bridge Street Bridge located .48 miles from the junction of the Belle River and St. Clair River.

I recall crossing this bridge on foot on a few occasions when it was somewhat worse for wear a short time before its removal. From Google Earth it appears that some of the concrete embankment for the old bridge are still visible on the west side of the river.

I was wondering if anyone knows of the history of this bridge as looking it up on the internet has not produced any information or pictures.

Does anyone know when was the last time the bridge was opened to allow a vessel passage?

Thanks for any replies.
