More re W. F. White on the East Coast

Unread post by RTNerd »

Found this picture in a Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers paper yesterday and recalled the thread on this board last June re the W. F. White on Chesapeake Bay. The caption indicates that the location is Norfolk, Va. and it shows the cargo piled above the hatch coamings and spilled on deck. The picture confirms a statement in earlier posts that cleanup was lax. Wisp of smoke from stack indicates that the boilers were operating. Doubt the vessel made ocean voyages with the hatches open. They likely traveled between Chesapeake Bay and the Delaware River through the C and D canal.
