Most often, the trip to the breakers is undertaken by a third party, not the new owner. This sometimes requires that it be re-registered, usually under a new name. Painting over a few letters of the original name to come up with a new one is an expedient solution. It’s also possible that the original owner may want to re-use the name on a future vessel or may just wish that ‘their name’ not be transferred to a new owner, so they include a name change as part of the sale agreement.
